I had the opportunity to be my daughter’s date last night as Jessica Day George spoke at our local independent bookstore. What a great night!
Day George’s books (The Dragon Slippers books, the Tuesdays at the Castle series, the Twelve Dancing Princesses series) are some of my kids’ favorites. Because they picked them up after they were reading independently, I’ve never read them. That’s going to change.
Day George spoke about loving horses but hating the horse books available to her as a child (I’m looking at you, Black Beauty), and falling in love with Robin McKinley’s The Hero and the Crown, which is one of my favorites. Day George’s newest book, The Rose Legacy, sounds like Anne McCaffrey meets Robin McKinley at Downton Abbey. What’s not to love?
I’ll post again once I’ve read it, but I’ll leave you with my two favorite quotes from her talk:
“In my books, NO HORSES WILL DIE.”
“The only thing better than pizza is free pizza.”
