LePore’s book These Truths: A History of the United States is a powerful biography of American liberty and its evil twin, American slavery. LePore’s scholarship is impeccable, her writing compelling.
These Truths begins in 1492 with exploration and colonization. She traces the truth Jefferson promoted, “that all men are created equal,” through the convolutions of thought that allowed chattel slavery, partial suffrage and decades of Jim Crow laws. She profiles the political gymnastics employed by centuries of presidents and Congressional leaders to justify the inequalities in our history. She concludes with the democratization of “news” and the challenges inherent in universal of every user of the internet becoming their own news correspondent.
This is an important book, well-written and enlightening from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
