What a stunning novel. I just discovered this book and feel like a night owl who just discovered sunrise. Hurston writes with an economy of description that leaves you with a good sense of a person even after the briefest description.
We meet Janie as she’s coming back to her home after a time away, and she tells her own story to a friend in a mixture of occasionally hard-to-read dialect, and stunning prose.
Janie was married off by her grandmother at sixteen in order to “save” her, and Janie pays the price of that for years. Janie’s story is one of self-discovery and exploration of a world that doesn’t understand her. This is a book I’m sure I’ll read again, and I’m sure that, like all good books, will resonate in new ways each time. Don’t miss this one.
